Empowering Women & Strengthening Communities in ‘Eua
The first island-wide rollout of the Manaaki Project
About the Manaaki Project in ‘Eua
The Manaaki Project was officially launched in ‘Eua on 5–6 August 2025 at SDA Hall, Ohonua.
This is the first island where the project is being implemented, a partnership between MFAT, NZNGO
Christian World Service (CWS), and Tonga Community Development Trust (TCDT).
The project works with Ama Takiloa Women Groups (ATWGs) to strengthen families and communities, helping them become more resilient to:
Financial hardship
Food insecurity
Climate change impacts and natural disasters

Event Highlights
Launching the Manaaki Project
The Manaaki Project was officially launched by the New Zealand High Commissioner, H.E. Matthew Howell, together with the Town Officers, District Officers, and the Amatakiloa Women’s Groups of ‘Eua. The event included inspiring speeches, formal program facilitation by the TCDT Executive Director, and a group celebration to mark this milestone.

Amatakiloa Training
The training introduced the Amatakiloa Program and outlined project expectations.
41 participants (40 women and 1 man) from eight villages attended. Each group received coaching to build their knowledge base and plan for the next six months.

Monitoring & Progress
A two-week reporting schedule was introduced to encourage consistent monitoring and follow-up.
The first round of updates was successfully submitted by all groups, with some reports serving as excellent examples for others.
