About OHG
This project will be accomplished by grassroots
development activities centered on the establishment of home gardens and the promotion of village-based subsistence agriculture training activities. Project components will include both practical, demonstrative
activities, and technical/training grassroots development activities.
The primary beneficiaries of this project will be the Hihifo women's and their families on the main island of Ha'apai. A minimum of 80 rural families will participate in and benefit from the project. The benefits gained from participants include
• Promotion of sustainable, low-cost, low-impact, chemical-free methods of domestic agriculture and Home gardening
• Increase family food production
• Enhanced food security for rural families
• Increased availability of local vegetables and fruits, through replanting
• Training and education in the fields of home nutrition, family health and proper diet
Aim
The overall goal is to promote healthy and sustainable livelihoods for rural dwellers in the village of Hihifo, Ha'apai. This will be achieved by promotion of sustainable, grassroots agriculture interventions that involve an integrated approach to the agriculture, environment and health sectors.
Expected Outcomes
he objectives of this project are:
• To promote organic home gardens in the village
• To promote using of Home Composting of domestic degradable organic waste as an alternative method for burning
• To promote the utilization of local materials for securing home and gardens
• Replanting and reviving of traditional plant (fruit trees, medicinal, coastal plant etc) as part of inland and coastal re-vegetation
• To provide training and education in associated field of organic agriculture, Climate Change Mitigation Options, human health etc
